Stop One MWT

The Michigan Walleye Tour (MWT) kicked off the 2024 season March 16th and 17th on the Saginaw River and the 150 teams were faced with tough weather and water conditions as they began their quest to make the season ending championship.

Mother Nature challenged the anglers with tough weather conditions and the anglers who reacted the fastest to the challenging and changing weather conditions came out on top. Be sure to be prepared for your next fishing trip by checking the weather, wind and wave conditions with our Trip Planning Resources.

While weights and total fish caught were lower than expectations, one team figured out the bite and went home with a First-Place check worth $12000, and big fish each day passed the 10lb mark. Finding pods of fish on sonar, especially SideScan, was a key to finding, staying on and catching negative fish. Learn how to interpret your sonar with our Sonar Interpretation workshop.

The top teams used several presentations to catch their fish including handling, trolling crankbaits, 3-way rigging and jigging. Jigging, both vertical jigging and casting jigs, was effective for a lot of the teams and the winning team used jigging each day as apart of their winning program. Check out how to pick the best jig for any presentation.

APRIL: WATER COLOR and CLARITY

Every angler knows that water color and clarity can play a big part in fishing success, but few spend the time to find the BEST color and clarity. This month Captain Lance discusses how water color and clarity affect fish and presentations, how waters get dirty, how to determine color and clarity and what you can do to adjust to different conditions every day. Water color and clarity have different effects on rives, lakes and reservoirs and Lance will dig into how each is different, with a chapter focused entirely on the Detroit River!
